Health and PE 9th Grade
2007-2008
My hope with this class is to instill in all of you a lifelong appreciation for a healthy lifestyle including taking care of yourselves physically, and emotionally. In PE you will have a chance to review some basic skills as well as play a variety of sports. You might also get to engage in an activity or sport you have never tried before. Health class will be a discussion oriented class and it is imperative that you come to class prepared and ready to contribute to the discussion.
I have put together a list of my expectations and policies so that you know what is expected of you in the upcoming year. For starters, unless you are otherwise instructed, we will balance our classes as follows:
* Health class on Days 1, 3 & 5 *
* PE class on Days 2, 4 & 6 *
It is your responsibility to arrive prepared for class everyday. In other words, you need to bring your PE clothes for days when we have PE and your Health text book, notebook, and any homework that was assigned in the previous health class for days when we have Health.
I am really looking forward to having some fun and sharing some knowledge.

General Effort and Participation
Your participation will have a great effect on your overall performance and ultimately on your grade this year. Therefore, I feel it is important to start with my expectations of you in the classroom. As I assess your daily performance and participation these expectations will be taken into consideration.
HOMEWORK
Homework is another way you show your effort. It takes many forms in Health class and is an integral part of our curriculum. Each health class, homework is a building block for what we are doing in class and allows for more hands-on activities as well as discussions and reflection while we are together.
You may be asked to read, keep a journal, prepare for a discussion, study for a test, reflect, or just bring something in.
Whatever you may be doing for homework, I expect you to do the best job possible and turn work in on time! Homework must be complete, legible, and proofread. Your name, the date, and teacher’s name must all be in the upper right hand corner. Homework will always be due at the start of class. Homework not completed by the beginning of class must be handed in by 12:20 the next school day at which time it will receive 50%. After that time it will receive 0%.
CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Lateness: Do not come late to class without a note of explanation. Consequences for arriving late will range from serious disappointment on my part to a phone call home.
Absences: In the event that you are out of school I suggest that you call a classmate to get homework assignments, and make arrangements to copy notes. You are responsible to collect missing work/information from me upon your return. Tests are to be made up within five school days.
After School Help: I will be available for help or to discuss the class after school.
Journal writing: Many of the assignments in Health class will ask you to reflect on what you have learned and to write about the topic in a personal way. You will need a notebook dedicated to Health class that, in general, can be turned in on Fridays and returned on Mondays. Your journal is a confidential conversation between you and me. I will comment in your journals and assess them based on my perception of the time and energy you put into your reflections. There are no right or wrong answers in a journal, there is only quality of effort.
There will be homework and there will be tests. You will know at least one week in advance of any test.
Grades will be based on these ranges and grade points will be calculated using the following scale:
Each student needs to have a notebook dedicated for Health Class, journal writing as well as some place to take notes (in a binder, in another notebook…whatever system works for you). You will be issued a Health textbook and are responsible for keeping track of it and for keeping it in good condition.
Each student is expected to be fully attired for the PE classes. This includes the appropriate swimwear for swimming and the PE Uniform.

Physical Education
P E
PE - During this quarter we played Soft Ball and the game of Cricket was introduced. Each week the rules were explained and executed. After Spring Break we will continue with Cricket and Soccer. There is a swimming requirement for graduation from Good Hope. This requirement is usually fulfilled in their 9th grade PE. They are required to be able to demonstrate knowledge of at least three strokes along with Under Water Breath Control and Treading Water. The test for this requirement will take place in April.
